Eastia

Eastia is a distant continent separated from DisCity by vast natural geographic barriers. Communication and trade between Eastia and DisCity is rare due to these immense distances, and made rarer by frequent apocalyptic catastrophes that have wracked the continent since Nightfall. Immediately after Nightfall, the region was dominated by the first seers to awaken to their abilities. These early tyrants used mythology as a political tool to maintain power, but were later overthrown by the next generation of seers. In the present, Eastia is home to a number of distinct city-states, but in spite of (or perhaps because of) the dangers of their continent, Eastian polities appear to be more united than those of the Western Continent, having banded together into an "Eastian Alliance" to survive. Little is known about the geography or political composition of the region, but the Alliance encompasses many cities and a huge geographical area; Goldionville is said to be 1500 miles southeast of Sunsink City, which is itself located in the eastern part of the continent. Constant devastation has kept Eastian industries and economies relatively underdeveloped and primarily based on agriculture. In N.F. 113, the continent was struck by disasters so severe that it was widely believed in DisCity that the entire continent had sunk into the sea.

DisCity media often exoticizes and exaggerates Eastian luxuries and beliefs, but the continent does possess a very different culture from that of DisCity. In Eastian, myths and traditions are inseparable from daily life. Some beliefs are common across the continent, while other traditions are geographically isolated to specific towns. Due to the unreliability of Hypercube trade with DisCity, Eastians have developed a culture that venerates "seers", individuals with mystical Mania-derived powers that can ward off attacks by Apostles and the effects of the Tide of Ashes. Apostles themselves are often deified, with offerings made to appease them. Eastian lore refers to Corruptors as "Wraith Beasts" and ascribes them with lesser divine significance than true Apostles. Although much of Eastian mythology is simply the result of misguided attempts to rationalize the horrors of a supernatural, post-apocalyptic world, there are hints that some stories may contain truths there is no rational way for them to know. Particularly, the myth of the Azure Mender tells that a three-eyed god intended to descend from heaven to earth in order to enlighten human beings, but fell and knocked himself unconscious. Plagues and disasters fell through the hole in the sky but a hero created pillars of blue light to support the collapsing sky.

After the Sun Crow's attack on DisCity in N.F. 114, communication and trade were resumed between Eastia and DisCity. Despite ongoing tension about technical security issues, the public is optimistic about future development between the two states.

Seers

Seers are key to both the cultural beliefs and practical survival of Eastia. Seers share many similarities with Sinners; they begin life as ordinary people, who later awaken to an innate psychic gift when catalyzed by Mania disasters. Unlike DisCity Sinners, however, Eastian seers do not have the same strange and diverse range of powers, they do not produce Mania contamination, and they do not suffer from the same mental instability. Instead, seers possess an ability to receive and interpret visions caused by activity within the Deep Mania. They also often resonate with the Apostles (in Eastian parlance, "deities" or "demons") that awakened them, and possess similar Mania properties, such as Yanyan possessing fire powers like those of the Sun Crow -- a relationship known as "channelling". In addition to their inherent psychic powers, some seers have learned to harness Mania sorcery, which they use in techniques called "sealing".

Seers' main duty is to conduct "secret rituals" to shape and strengthen the collective will of the continent's peoples as a defensive weapon against Mania-based catastrophes, as well as to craft ritual tools (such as the Almighty Bow used against the Sun Crow) that harness the power of collective will.
